Разработан в 1993 г. Лежит в основе технологии OLE 2.0. Объект в СОМ после создания предоставляет свою функциональность вызвавшему процессу, а после использования - уничтожается. При этом сам объект пассивен. Он лишь передаёт через интерфейсы свои функции (интерфейсом в этой технологии называется группа взаимосвязанных функций).
